So What's This All About?

Kay's Coffee

In November 2024, the mother of two of our team, Kay, was diagnosed with grade 2 breast cancer. Her eldest son, Courtney, is one of our owners and her youngest Scott is our production and design guy.

Since her diagnosis she has undergone a full mastectomy, six rounds of chemotherapy, and fifteen rounds of radiotherapy. She continues her treatment journey with long-term immunotherapy and unfortunately is not yet cancer-free.

Through every stage of this fight, Kay has shown extraordinary strength, resilience, and positivity — lifting those around her even in the hardest moments.

To honour her determination, Scott is taking on the challenge of completing an Ironman 70.3 — it will be incredibly difficult, but at the same time reflects only a fraction of the perseverance, grit, and belief Kay continues to show every single day.

Kay also runs a great coffee shop in Abersoch, Wales called 'Blades' so has been a valued wholesale customer of The Good Coffee Cartel for the past nine years. That makes this coffee deeply personal to all of us. This release is our way of honouring her journey and showing our support in any way we can.

About The Ironman

The IRONMAN 70.3 in Jönköping, Sweden, was chosen as a challenge that reflects the endurance, resilience, and sacrifice Kay has shown throughout her treatment journey. Much like the battle she continues to face every day, the event demands both physical strength and mental determination — requiring months of preparation, discipline, and the ability to keep pushing forward even when things become difficult.

Consisting of a 1.9km open-water swim, a 90km cycle through the Swedish countryside, and a 21.1km half marathon to finish, the race is designed to test every part of a person physically and mentally. For Scott, taking on this challenge became a way of honouring the perseverance Kay has shown throughout surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and her ongoing immunotherapy treatment.

More than just a race, the challenge also became something positive for Kay to focus on during an incredibly difficult period. Following Scott’s training, progress, and preparation gave her another reason to stay engaged and involved — turning the event into something the whole family could rally behind together. It became a source of motivation, conversation, and shared determination at a time when those moments mattered most.

At its core, the challenge represents far more than crossing a finish line. It stands as a reflection of the strength Kay continues to show every single day, and a reminder of what can be achieved through resilience, belief, and the support of those around us.

About The Charities

The charities chosen for this campaign hold a deeply personal connection to Kay’s journey and the support her family have received throughout her treatment.

Funds raised will support the Alaw Ward at Ysbyty Gwynedd, whose incredible staff have cared for Kay with compassion, kindness, and unwavering dedication since her diagnosis. From treatment through to recovery, the team on the ward have provided not only medical care, but reassurance and humanity during some of the family’s most difficult moments. Supporting the ward is a way of giving back to the people who have stood beside Kay throughout her fight.

The campaign also supports Breast Cancer Now, a charity that played a vital role following Kay’s diagnosis. Through trusted information, guidance, and ongoing support, they have been a constant source of reassurance for both Kay and her family during an incredibly overwhelming time. Their work in research, early detection, treatment, and patient support continues to change and save lives across the UK.

Together, these charities represent both the personal care experienced first-hand by Kay and her family, and the wider support network helping thousands of others facing breast cancer every day.

Why They're So Important

“The Luzia Collective is about creating sustainable, inclusive growth for female farmers in a traditionally male-dominated sector. These are female producers who are hands-on with the product, managing key aspects of production and creating great coffee. The project not only ensures profitable conditions and fair payment, but also creates a space for these women to collaborate with each other and share their experiences and to access knowledge from professionals and industry leaders in a space that allows them to engage.
While the project continues to grow, in 2024, negotiations increased 20%, with over 70 producers receiving quality premiums totalling more than USD 30,000. These bonuses fund farm improvements such as better equipment, infrastructure, and training. Contributing producers also have exclusive access to more workshops on regenerative agriculture, biological control, and cupping, bridging the gap between farm-level practices and the specialty coffee market’s demands.”

The Process

This natural process coffee is a communal lot produced by a collective of women producers in Brazil who connected through the Cooxupé Cooperative, an organisation aimed at consolidating producers' commitment to quality and sustainability through education and community, ensuring longevity

Cherries are selected for quality using both manual and mechanical harvesting techniques then the entire cherries are sun-dried on patios

The Farms

This lot is comprised of four farms in Brazil (Sítio Prata, Fazenda Monte Alto, Nova Resende and Sítio Buscapé) which allows for sufficient volume whilst maintaining traceability and a consistent flavour profile that we love!
